Description

What is Cluster Dextrin®?

Cluster Dextrin is a special carbohydrate made from corn starch. Just like starch, dextrins are composed of linked glucose molecules. The special feature of Cluster Dextrin lies in its molecular structure: the glucose molecules are linked to each other both linearly and cyclically. To produce Cluster Dextrin, the chemical structure of maltodextrin obtained from corn starch is modified so that a highly branched cyclic dextrin is formed.

The Benefits of Cluster Dextrin®

Limited availability of muscle and liver glycogen can limit athletic performance during intense exercise. Carbohydrate intake during sport supplies the body with energy, while after exertion it serves to restore muscle function (Q).

Due to its high solubility, low viscosity and high stability in liquids, Cluster Dextrin powder is particularly well suited for preparing carbohydrate-rich sports drinks. Compared to other carbohydrates such as conventional maltodextrin, Cluster Dextrin is also characterised by high molecular weight and low osmolarity. This means it passes through the stomach faster, binds little water in the intestines and is therefore particularly well tolerated (Q, Q, Q). Cyclic dextrin can restore muscle glycogen particularly quickly after intense exercise compared to carbohydrates with higher osmolarity (Q).

However, when it comes to efficacy, Cluster Dextrin could also be superior to other carbohydrates (Q, Q, Q). A study with swimmers shows that the time to exhaustion with cyclic dextrin supplementation was 70% longer than with glucose or pure water (Q). Animal studies suggest that cyclic dextrin, compared to glucose, could provide glucose in the bloodstream for longer due to its complex branched structure. The associated lower insulin release could prevent performance-limiting hypoglycaemia and thus delay exhaustion (Q).

What Sets Our Cluster Dextrin® Apart?
