Description
What is N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC)?
L-Cysteine is a semi-essential amino acid, which means it can fundamentally be produced by the body itself (mainly from methionine), although supplementation may be advisable during certain life phases.
What is special about cysteine is that it is a so-called sulphur-containing amino acid. That is, it contains sulphur, specifically at the terminal end as a sulphydryl group. The significance of cysteine for the body stems precisely from this: this reactive sulphur group can, for example, react with another sulphur group of a cysteine in another protein or another protein part and thus build disulphide bonds.
The Function of N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine
This in turn provides stress tolerance, tensile strength, and also the function of various proteins in the body. An excellent example of this is the structural protein keratin, which in mammals is found in large proportions in hair, fingernails and toenails, claws, hooves, horns and nasal horns. The fibres are all the stiffer, the more strongly their components are cross-linked through disulphide bonds via L-cysteine. So keratin in horns and claws contains more disulphide bonds than that in wool and hair.
However, the sulphydryl group of cysteine also reacts with metals. Therefore, for example, zinc in proteins is often bound to cysteine. Due to this property, cysteine is also a main component of the body's own antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione can, for example, react with heavy metals via the sulphydryl group, bind them and thereby detoxify them.
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) is an acetylated form of cysteine. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and mucus-dissolving properties of NAC are the reason for the use of NAC in higher doses as a medicine (e.g. ACC® akut). After ingestion, NAC is also converted to L-cysteine, which in turn is partially converted to glutathione. However, NAC is more stable than free L-cysteine and has much lower toxicity, making it safer and more effective for increasing cysteine levels in the body.
