Description

What is vegan Omega-3?

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that the body needs for numerous functions. Omega-3 and the related Omega-6 fatty acids are hydrocarbon chains with at least two double bonds. They belong to the essential nutrients and must therefore be obtained through diet.

The three main Omega-3 fatty acids are:

  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) – found in walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds and corresponding oils

  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) – mainly in fish and certain algae such as Schizochytrium sp.

  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – also mainly found in fish and algae

ALA is considered the parent fatty acid of Omega-3 fatty acids, since it can be converted by the body through enzymatic steps into EPA and further into DHA. However, this process is inefficient. This is because the enzyme that carries out this conversion (Delta-6-desaturase) is also used for other reactions in the body and therefore cannot produce as much EPA and DHA as the body needs (Q). Therefore, additional supplementation – especially with little or no fish consumption – is beneficial, if not almost essential. (Q)

When converting ALA to EPA, stearidonic acid (SDA), another Omega-3 fatty acid, is produced as an intermediate. Studies show that the body converts SDA significantly more efficiently into EPA than ALA. Therefore, SDA is a better precursor for the body's own EPA synthesis. (Q, Q)

We use a combination of Ahiflower®-oil (rich in SDA and ALA) and algal oil from the algae Schizochytrium sp. (rich in DHA). Thanks to this excellent composition, our vegan Omega-3 oil provides optimal Omega-3 fatty acid supply. Ahiflower is the oil from the plant Buglossoides arvensis, a member of the Boraginaceae family. This plant is primarily native to Europe, but can also be found in parts of Asia and North America.

The benefits of vegan Omega-3 oil

Vegan Omega-3 oil offers a sustainable alternative to conventional Omega-3 from fish oil.

Approved health claims are:

  • DHA and EPA support normal heart function

  • DHA and EPA help maintain normal blood pressure

  • DHA and EPA contribute to normal fasting triglyceride levels in the blood

  • DHA supports the maintenance of normal brain function

  • DHA helps maintain normal vision development in infants up to 12 months of age

  • DHA contributes to normal eye development of the fetus and the breastfed infant.

  • Maternal DHA intake contributes to normal brain development of the fetus and the breastfed infant.

  • DHA helps maintain normal vision

  • ALA helps maintain normal blood cholesterol levels

What distinguishes our vegan Omega-3 oil?

Our vegan Omega-3 oil impresses with its high quality and purity. The carefully selected combination of Ahiflower®-oil, algal oil and flaxseed oil provides a sustainable, vegan source of Omega-3 fatty acids and also contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an important Omega-6 fatty acid. Thanks to its mild flavour with a subtle lemon note, it is particularly pleasant to take and ideal for daily use. By using plants, we offer a sustainable, environmentally friendly and highly pure source of these vital fatty acids – completely without fish.
