Konrad "Koni" Kaufmann trains in Wädenswil on Lake Zurich and competes in the masters 65-69 division. He found CrossFit in 2017 at 57, more or less by accident: a foundations course while on holiday in Mallorca. Before that he played ice hockey in the Swiss national league, skied, played tennis and spent a lifetime in the weight room.
He got his first hip replacement at 52 and carries two artificial hips today. It never made him stop. In 2021 he qualified for the CrossFit Games for the first time. Then Covid set him back, and the road back to the top took three years: in 2025 he stood at the Games again and finished fifth in the world in his division. In July 2026 he competes in San Jose for the third time.
He trains five to six times a week, up to 15 hours in heavy weeks. At 65 he hit his first bar muscle-up and added another five kilos to his back squat. His stack is as sober as his training: whey isolate and EAA around sessions, creatine daily, glutamine and citrulline malate for recovery and pump.
Away from the box he is a husband, father of two grown sons and grandfather of two granddaughters. Fridays belong to the granddaughters; he calls it his favourite day of the week. His line on all of it: "Everything starts with the first step. Believe in what you're doing, and find something you love."
Before leaving for San Jose, Koni answered 10 questions for us on nutrition, supplements and competition mindset: read the full interview.
