What exactly is Myo-Inositol?
Myo-Inositol is a special sugar (alcohol) that occurs in high concentrations in mammalian tissues.
In the body, it is incorporated as Phosphatidylinositol in cell membranes and serves as a basic building block for certain secondary messengers (Secondary Messengers), which play an important role in cellular signal transmission.
The Myo-Inositol effect is evident in numerous biological processes.
Myo-Inositol powder has a sweet inherent taste and about half the sweetness of household sugar, making it simple to integrate Myo-Inositol into food or drinks.
Inositol is naturally produced in the human body from glucose.
One human kidney produces approximately two grams per day.
Additionally, Inositol is also synthesised by other tissues, with the highest concentration found in the brain, where it helps neurotransmitters and certain steroid hormones bind to their respective receptors.
What function can Myo-Inositol have in the body?
Myo-Inositol, Phosphatidylinositol and their derivatives are involved in numerous biological processes that are crucial for health.
The most important functions include,
- supporting insulin action,
- building the cell skeleton
- regulating intracellular calcium concentration.
Furthermore, Myo-Inositol plays a central role in,
- maintaining cell membrane potential,
- fat breakdown
- gene expression.
The Myo-Inositol effect on these processes makes it an important component of a balanced diet.
Myo-Inositol, its phosphates and the associated lipids are found in many foods, particularly in fruit such as melons and oranges.
In plant-based foods, particularly in cereals, legumes and nuts, Inositol is also found in the form of phytic acid, which is, however, unsuitable for humans.
There it occurs as a so-called hexaphosphate, where Inositol is linked with six phosphate residues. In plants, the Inositol present as phytic acid serves as a phosphate store.
Humans cannot digest phytic acid, unlike, for example, herbivores, because they lack the enzyme phytase. Instead, phytic acid functions here as a so-called anti-nutrient because it is capable of binding, for example, iron and zinc and thus inhibiting their absorption. Phytic acid is therefore not a suitable source of Inositol for humans.
In contrast, Inositol is well-available when supplied as Phosphatidylinositol, that is, in the lecithin or phospholipid form. This is found in abundance in, for example, soy lecithin of the same name, but also in liver, egg yolk and salmon, which are typically very rich in phospholipids.
Myo-Inositol Powder as a dietary supplement
To this day, Myo-Inositol is often regarded as an "extended" member of the B-complex vitamins and referred to as Vitamin B8 in this context.
Since it is, however, produced by the human body from glucose itself, it does not, by definition, belong to the essential nutrients.
Nevertheless, there are specific situations in which targeted Myo-Inositol dosage in the form of dietary supplements can be beneficial, particularly for certain health conditions.
For example, people with diabetes excrete significantly more Inositol via urine (DiNicolantonio & O'Keefe, 2022). Also in the context of PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), research has been conducted with promise for years using Inositol powder as a dietary supplement.
Only in 2021 did a review (study summary, overview) come to the conclusion:
Myo-Inositol (MI) increases insulin sensitivity, reduces hyperandrogenism and improves the menstrual cycle. (...) Myo-Inositol is effective in normalising ovarian function and improving egg cell and embryo quality in PCOS, however, further assessments through large multicentre randomised controlled studies are required to evaluate the clinical pregnancy and live birth rates."
