Description
Our EGCG capsules: This is green tea
Green tea is a type of tea made from leaves and buds of the Camellia sinensis that have not undergone the same withering and oxidation process as Oolong and black tea. Green tea originated in China and has since spread to other East Asian countries.
Green tea has been drunk for centuries. A book written by Lu Yu in the years 618-907 CE (Tang Dynasty), The Classic of Tea, is considered important for the history of green tea. The Kissa Yōjōki (喫茶養生記 Book of Tea, literally: Record of tea drinking for the nourishment of life) written by Zen priest Eisai in 1211 describes how drinking green tea can affect five vital organs, the forms of tea plants, flowers and leaves, and how to grow and process tea leaves.
From a health perspective, green tea is interesting because the polyphenols contained in the leaves are water-soluble and can be supplied accordingly. The polyphenols contained in green tea include epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epicatechins and flavanols, whose possible effects in vivo are being researched in the laboratory.
EGCG is considered the most important antioxidant of green tea. It is attributed an enormous array of potential health benefits: for example, EGCG is said to positively influence insulin and blood sugar levels, but also have a beneficial effect on neurodegenerative diseases, skin conditions and cholesterol levels. EGCG is also said to have a positive effect in connection with cancer. In 2004, a receptor was even discovered through which EGCG is said to act in the body. (See Uni Saarland)
The edubily® green tea extract under the microscope
We use a green tea extract that is standardised to 50% EGCG content and is virtually caffeine-free. This means our extract can be taken at any time of day.
One capsule contains 500 mg green tea extract and 250 mg EGCG. A cup of green tea typically contains around 50 mg EGCG equivalents, which in turn means that one capsule of our extract, with regard to EGCG content, is equivalent to approximately five cups of green tea.
