Description

What exactly is choline and what role does it play?

For a long time, choline was considered merely a semi-essential nutrient. That means: the body has the enzymes to produce it itself and only in certain situations (e.g. growth) must it be supplied through food. Today it is clear that the daily choline requirement is around 400 mg and up to 90 % of people in Western nations consume too little of it. This is also because many polymorphisms of the PEMT gene, through which choline is mainly produced, reduce the synthesis capacity. Pregnant and breastfeeding women have the highest requirement due to the importance of choline for the baby's development, with around 500 mg per day.

Choline occurs predominantly in animal sources, with liver (approx. 400 mg per 100 g) and eggs (approx. 150 mg per egg yolk) being the best source. A good vegetarian and vegan choline source is soy or sunflower lecithin.

Both in food and in our body, choline rarely occurs as a free form, but usually as a so-called phospholipid (also called lecithin).

In this process, choline is linked with fatty acids. In this role, choline is extremely important, primarily as a component of cell membranes, mitochondrial membranes or as lipoproteins, which are produced by the liver and transport fats and cholesterol. Additionally, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is produced from choline, which plays an important role especially in nerve-muscle communication, memory and neuronal development, and S-Adenosylmethionine, the "universal methyl donor".

It has been proven for many decades that a choline deficiency, due to insufficient phospholipid and thus lipoprotein production, leads to fat accumulation and thus to fatty liver formation. Furthermore, muscle damage and metabolic disorders occur. Choline may be closely linked to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. To prevent deficiency and support metabolism, regular intake of choline capsules is recommended.

The edubily® Choline Supplement: CDP-Choline Capsules

We use CDP-choline from the brand Cognizin® in our capsules. CDP-choline is also known under the name Citicolin.

It is particularly noteworthy that CDP-choline is both a direct precursor to Phosphatidylcholine as well as to free choline, which can be used, for example, for the synthesis of acetylcholine. Due to its rapid absorption and excellent bioavailability, CDP-choline is an ideal supplement that is also extensively researched clinically and associated with good results.

Each capsule contains 500 mg CDP-choline powder, which provides 100 mg. This way, your diet can be ideally enhanced with this choline source as needed.
