Description

What exactly is Collagen?

Collagen is a structural protein that is found in many tissues of the human body and plays a crucial role in maintaining their mechanical strength and elasticity.

It consists of long polypeptide chains made up of a variety of amino acids, with glycine and proline being particularly prevalent. Glycine, the simplest amino acid, enables the tight packing and stability of the collagen structure, while proline supports the formation of characteristic three-dimensional helices, which are crucial for the structural integrity of the protein.

This specific amino acid composition gives collagen its remarkable tensile strength and flexibility, making it an essential component of tissues such as skin, bones, cartilage and tendons.

Why Collagen Hydrolysate?

Collagen hydrolysate is a form of collagen that is produced through an enzymatic process called hydrolysis. In this process, long collagen molecules are broken down into smaller peptides. These peptides have a lower molecular weight and increased solubility compared to intact collagen protein. Through hydrolysis, collagen hydrolysate becomes more easily digestible and better absorbed by the body.

The hydrolysate is rich in amino acids that are needed for collagen formation in the body. In particular, it contains glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, which play an important role in the structure and function of collagen.

Marine Collagen Hydrolysate from edubily®

In addition to our certified beef collagen from pasture-raised cattle, we also offer collagen hydrolysate from the skin of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from certified aquaculture.

The collagen hydrolysate has the advantage of being completely flavour-neutral and has excellent solubility, which means no additives whatsoever are needed. The fish collagen is exclusively Type I and has a molecular weight of 2000–3000 Daltons.

A recent gold standard human study from 2023 with 100 participants who received marine collagen hydrolysate from tilapia, concludes:

These results show that the bioactive peptides with low molecular weight contained in collagen hydrolysate from tilapia, such as Gly-Pro and Pro-Hyp, have positive effects on skin moisture, elasticity, skin flaking and wrinkle formation.

Is the raw material source trustworthy?

Our supplier is the same one from which we also obtain our beef collagen hydrolysate from pasture-raised cattle. This means we have a trustworthy partner that is BRC, ISO 22000 and ISO 9001 certified.

Furthermore, the aquaculture itself is BAP and Friend of the Sea certified (see documents). This ensures the following, amongst other things:

  • Environmental Compatibility: The certification ensures that aquaculture practices burden the environment as little as possible. This includes monitoring water quality, sustainable use of resources and minimisation of waste and pollutants.

  • Social Responsibility: BAP-certified operations must provide fair and safe working conditions. This includes compliance with labour laws, protection of employee rights and support for local communities.

  • Food Safety: BAP certification ensures that products from aquaculture are safe and of high quality. This includes measures to prevent contamination, compliance with hygiene standards and regular inspections.

  • Animal Health and Welfare: The health and welfare of farmed animals are at the centre of the certification. This includes appropriate animal husbandry, prevention of disease and the use of medicines only when necessary and under strict control.

  • Traceability: The certification requires traceability systems to track the origin of products from the farm to the end consumer. This increases transparency and consumer trust in the products.
