Vitamin D and K are now firm fixtures in many home medicine cabinets – and rightly so. Especially in winter, up to 80 % of people are not optimally supplied with the "sunshine vitamin" D (Q). This is relevant because Vitamin D is converted in the body into a hormone called Calcitriol, which influences over 1000 genes and thereby controls various functions in the organism.

Among the best-known effects are the regulation of the immune system, bone metabolism and the influence of enzymes in the nervous system, such as Tryptophan Hydroxylase. These far-reaching effects naturally apply to children as well, whose requirement and supply during the growth phase is particularly important.

Why Vitamin D and K are Important for Children

Calcium is the most relevant factor for stable bones. The more calcium is deposited in the bones, the stronger the bones are. Vitamin D and K support the transport of calcium from the blood into the bones. The two vitamins work together in this process: Vitamin D gives the order and Vitamin K carries out the order. An increased intake of Vitamin D can therefore also increase the required amount of Vitamin K.
