Description
What is Vitamin D and why is it so important?
Vitamin D is nowadays found in almost every household medicine cabinet.
This is good, because in winter up to 80% of people are suboptimally supplied with the sunshine vitamin (Rabenberg et al. 2015). This should be assessed against the backdrop that Vitamin D is converted into a hormone called Calcitriol in the body, which is estimated to regulate approximately 1000 genes and thus has an incredibly far-reaching effect in the body. It is known, for example, that Vitamin D regulates the immune system in this way, has important functions in bone metabolism and regulates enzymes in the nervous system (e.g. Tryptophan-Hydroxylase).
A deficiency can be easily remedied with Vitamin D oil or capsules.
The following health claims are approved for Vitamin D:
- Vitamin D contributes to normal absorption/utilisation of calcium and phosphorus
- Vitamin D contributes to normal calcium levels in the blood
- Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bone structure
- Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function
- Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal teeth
- Vitamin D contributes to normal immune system function
- Vitamin D plays a role in the process of cell division
- Vitamin D contributes to reducing the risk of falling associated with postural instability and muscle weakness. Falls are a risk factor for bone fractures in men and women aged 60 years and above
- Vitamin D is required for normal bone growth and development in children
- Vitamin D contributes to normal immune system function in children
