Description
What is Calcium?
Calcium is the most commonly occurring mineral in the human body.
Its importance for the structure and firmness of bones and teeth is widely known – approximately 98% of the body's calcium is located in these structures. But the mineral can do much more: for instance, it plays an important role in many physiological processes.
As one of the most versatile Second Messenger molecules, calcium is a central variable in intracellular signal transmission. Second Messenger molecules are substances that respond to primary signals (e.g. from hormones) with a change in concentration and thus transmit stimuli from the cell surface to the interior of the cell. All cells regulate calcium concentration to respond to internal and external stimuli. Calcium contributes, amongst other things, to normal blood coagulation, muscle function, cell division and specialisation (Q).
Natural Calcium Sources
Calcium is found mainly in dairy products, legumes, green leafy vegetables and nuts. The WHO recommends a daily calcium intake of 1000 mg for adults and 1300 mg for women after the menopause and men aged 65 and over (Q). In many parts of the world, this amount is not achieved through diet (Q).
The Benefits of Calcium
The importance of calcium is also reflected in the numerous approved health claims.
Calcium
-
is needed for normal growth and development of bones in children.
-
contributes to normal blood coagulation.
-
contributes to normal energy metabolism.
-
contributes to normal muscle function.
-
contributes to normal neurotransmission.
-
contributes to normal function of digestive enzymes.
-
plays a role in the process of cell division and specialisation.
-
is needed for the maintenance of normal bones.
-
is needed for the maintenance of normal teeth.
-
helps to reduce the loss of bone minerals in women after the menopause. Low bone mineral density is a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures.
All these functions make it clear: calcium deficiency can quickly throw your body off balance. Therefore, adequate calcium supply is essential for your health and well-being.
What characterises our calcium capsules?
Our calcium capsules contain the organic branded ingredient OvocetⓇ, which is derived from eggshells – a calcium source with optimal bioavailability.
The calcium in our capsules is present as calcium carbonate, embedded in a natural matrix of magnesium, phosphorus and strontium. One of our capsules provides a whole 400 mg of elemental calcium.
Our vegan capsules come – unlike many calcium tablets – without unwanted fillers and additives.
