Why is Calcium so important?
The importance of calcium in the body is greatly underestimated. After sodium and potassium, it is the mineral element that we need to consume the most – the average calcium requirement is approximately 1000 mg. At the same time, however, it becomes clear that many people are not even coming close to achieving such values.
The list of functions of calcium in the body is long. It is commonly known that calcium is important for the structure of bones and teeth. But that is far from all: Calcium, as a so-called second messenger, controls numerous processes within cells. By consciously regulating the calcium concentration within the cell, the cell can control the activity of various proteins that can bind calcium.
In this way, intracellular calcium controls muscle contraction, the release of numerous neurotransmitters, hormone secretion, cell differentiation and proliferation, vision, the expression of genes and the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism.
But outside of cells, that is, 'extracellularly', calcium also plays a crucial role: It ensures cell-to-cell connections, it stabilises cell membranes, it regulates the exchange of substances between cells, it seals epithelia, it plays a crucial role in blood clotting, controls the excitability of the nervous system and the regulation of blood pressure.
The following health claims are approved for calcium or calcium powder:
- It contributes to normal blood clotting
- It contributes to normal energy metabolism
- It contributes to normal muscle function
- It contributes to normal neurotransmission
- It contributes to normal function of digestive enzymes
- It plays a role in the process of cell division and specialisation
- It is required for the maintenance of normal bones
- It is required for the maintenance of normal teeth
- It helps reduce the loss of bone minerals in women after the menopause. Low bone mineral density is a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures
- It is required for normal growth and development of bones in children.
Calcium Powder from edubily® - Calcium plus
Our calcium powder contains not just calcium – alongside the important amino acid glycine, we also use a generous amount of potassium and use exclusively compounds that provide further benefits for the body. We rely primarily on carbonates, phosphates and citrates – all of these compounds work 'alkaline', thus buffering acids in the body.
For many studies now show that exogenous supplementation with bases not only supports the body's own buffering system, but also influences the local pH value in the microenvironment.
To round out the composition of our calcium powder, we have additionally added sodium bicarbonate, known as natron.
