What is Glycine?
How about a functional amino acid that you can mix into your tea or coffee as a sugar substitute to sweeten your drinks? Glycine powder is ideal for this purpose. Glycine is not only the smallest (and finest ;-) amino acid, it also tastes pleasantly sweet. This makes it exceptionally easy to take, unlike almost any other amino acid.
Glycine is primarily needed in the body to form collagen or collagenous proteins. It is the most abundant protein in the body, the fundamental substance of connective tissue and thus an important component of bones, teeth, skin, joints, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Glycine is incorporated so frequently because it – as the smallest amino acid – enables the typical twists of collagen strands. Without glycine this would not be possible.
In recent years, many further effects of glycine have been described. For example, glycine functions in the nervous system as an inhibitory neurotransmitter by binding to the glycine receptor of the same name. Glycine also appears to have a positive influence on muscle anabolism, it is the starting material for the formation of important iron-containing proteins (e.g. haemoglobin) and it is a component of glutathione (antioxidant). Furthermore, results from a groundbreaking experiment suggest that glycine could play a crucial role in ageing:
The addition of glycine for 10 days to the culture medium of the 97-year-old fibroblast cell line led to restoration of mitochondrial function. This suggests that glycine treatment can reverse age-related mitochondrial defects in older human fibroblasts.
Glycine also appears to be very important because modern diet is increasingly depleted of it. Even just a few decades ago, people consumed significantly more glycine through food gelatine. A biochemical calculation suggests that modern people with average diet are missing approximately 5 g of glycine per day.
A detailed assessment of all possible glycine sources shows, (…) that the daily dose available from synthesis of approximately 3 g/day together with the amount available from diet of 1.5–3.0 g/day in a 70 kg person can fall significantly below the amount needed for all metabolic purposes, including collagen synthesis, of approximately 10 g/day.
