Description
Why are Omega 3 Capsules Important?
For many decades, it has been known that Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the body. This means we must obtain them from food to survive at all, since the body cannot produce these fatty acids itself. From animal research, it was originally known that the plant Omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, is essential.
In humans, it is somewhat more complex: In order for Omega-3 fatty acids to exert their essential effect in the body, alpha-linolenic acid must be elongated (via "elongase") and double bonds ("desaturase") must be inserted to create docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). In the human body, these enzymatic steps are slow and inefficient, so only a small portion of alpha-linolenic acid is converted into bioactive DHA and EPA. As a result, humans depend on adequate DHA and EPA intake - potentially through Omega 3 Capsules. In the body, DHA and EPA subsequently produce so-called docosanoids and eicosanoids, which act as important regulatory messengers and, as natural antagonists to Omega-6 fatty acids (e.g. arachidonic acid), among other things modulate inflammatory processes.

DHA and EPA in turn are found almost exclusively in animal, mostly marine organisms. The only exception is DHA-containing microalgae such as Schizochytrium sp..
The Importance of Omega 3 Capsules for Nutritional Supplementation
How high the amount of these fatty acids needs to be for optimal provision is the subject of research. What is certain is that current intake is too low at approximately 50-200 mg per day. A large portion of the world's population consumes less than 100 mg DHA per day. Research from leading Omega-3 researcher Prof. William Harris, who (co-)developed the so-called Omega-3 Index, suggests that optimal intake lies in the range of 1-2 g per day. More about the Omega-3 Index and research by William S. Harris here in the blog.

The edubily® Omega 3 Capsules in Focus
We source our Omega 3 for the capsules from EPAX®, which specialises in sustainable and innovative Omega-3 formulas. Thus, edubily® Omega 3 is a highly concentrated bioavailable triglyceride oil in the ideal 2:1 ratio (EPA:DHA), which is purified multiple times to remove contaminants such as heavy metals and pesticides. We have also had this purity confirmed once more by independent laboratories (see laboratory analyses). Our Omega 3 capsules are small and easy to take for people who have difficulty swallowing capsules.
